History

Historical Context

After Jammu and Kashmir joined India in 1947, Article 370 granted it a distinct constitution, reinforced by the 1954 Presidential Order. The BJP, fulfilling its 2014 manifesto, revoked the article on 5 August 2019, imposed a communications blackout and split the state into two union territories on 31 October 2019. In 2026 the J&K Legislative Assembly voted for full statehood, echoing opposition leaders Omar Abdullah and M.Y. Tarigami.
