Birmingham’s proposal, if implemented, would add thousands of miles of non-A roads to the national total.
Responses and Ongoing Debates
Local officials cite safety, air-quality and community benefits as the rationale for the speed reductions. Some opponents, however, have characterised Birmingham’s plan as a “war on cars,” arguing that the measures could inconvenience drivers and affect local commerce. Councils in Coventry and Leicestershire are seeking public feedback to balance these concerns before finalising any policy changes.
