Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s administration declared holidays for government offices in Bangkok and surrounding provinces on the Monday and Tuesday following the rains, according to Bloomberg. The Industry Ministry postponed the release of a revamped manufacturing production index until the following Wednesday. The Commerce Ministry later reported that the broader retail and wholesale network remains operational, although some convenience stores in flood-hit districts such as Bang Kapi, Min Buri and Rangsit experienced delivery delays.
Economic Impact Estimates
A preliminary estimate from the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, cited by Bloomberg, projects that the three-day deluge could shave 0.025 to 0.05 percentage points off Thailand’s annual economic growth—equivalent to roughly 5 billion to 10 billion baht ($298 million). Thanavath Phonvichai, the university’s president, expects overall growth of 2.2 %–2.3 % for the year despite the flooding.
Rangsit University economist Aat Pisanwanich estimates the floods may cut third-quarter output by about 0.23 %, driven mainly by losses in retail and financial services. He also warns that the tourism sector could lose up to 10 billion baht from flight cancellations and travelers shifting destinations.
Political Repercussions
A poll published on Sunday indicated declining support for Prime Minister Anutin and his Bhumjaithai Party ahead of the weekend’s events. Nonetheless, Titipol Phakdeewanich, a political-science lecturer at Ubon Ratchathani University, argued that the flooding, while serious, is unlikely to threaten the government because the disruption is concentrated in Bangkok, outside the party’s core support base.
Weather Outlook and Recovery
The Thai Meteorological Department warned of additional heavy downpours and localized flooding on the following Monday, with the weather system expected to shift northward before moving toward Myanmar. Models suggest conditions around Bangkok will become more seasonal or slightly drier by Wednesday, according to WeatherMapping.com. As waters recede, major retailers are replenishing inventories, and the city’s drainage infrastructure is working to restore normalcy.
