Israeli Travel Warning and Customs Inspections
Israel’s Foreign Ministry issued an overnight warning that Israelis traveling to the Netherlands could face “long and invasive baggage checks” after reports of customs officers inspecting luggage from flights arriving from Israel. Dutch Customs confirmed that officers are authorized to question travelers about the origin of products such as wine, dates, olives and other items that might derive from the prohibited areas, and to conduct X-ray scans. Passengers arriving on direct flights from Tel Aviv to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport described the inspections as unusually strict, while a member of Amsterdam’s Jewish community characterized them as “regular random customs checks” rather than a systematic operation targeting entire flights.
Diplomatic Retaliation
In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar revoked the diplomatic credentials of all Dutch diplomats operating at the Netherlands Representative Office in Ramallah. He ordered the diplomats to return their documentation within seven days, after which the Israeli-granted immunities would expire.
