In June 2020 Apple’s CEO Tim Cook announced a two-year plan to replace Intel x86 CPUs in Macs with Apple-designed ARM silicon. The first M1-based Mac mini, MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro arrived in November 2020, and the last Intel-based Mac Pro was discontinued in June 2023, ending the transition. It marks the third major instruction-set shift since the 1994 PowerPC transition.
