France-Galop announced in June that, beginning in 2027, geldings will be permitted to run in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. The decision follows concerns that the race’s prestige as Europe’s premier flat-racing event could be eroded if top-rated middle-distance geldings, such as the French-trained Calandagan, remain excluded.
Field and Preparations
The current entry list includes 19 possible runners, with Daryz leading the betting market. If victorious, Daryz would become the first male horse to win a second Arc since Alleged and Lester Piggott in 1978. Maltese Cross, trained by William Haggas (Piggott’s son-in-law), is also well-supported, especially given the expected firm ground.
Other notable contenders are:
- Kalapana – King George winner for trainer Andrew Balding, seeking to bring an Arc trophy back to Park House Stables after a 55-year family gap.
- Thundering On – Joseph O’Brien’s Oaks winner, whose participation hinges on a softer going.
- Pearled Majesty – part-owned by multiple-Arc-winning trainer Criquette Head.
- Arrow Eagle – the final mount for Jean-Claude Rouget before his 48-year career ends.
Japanese entries Meisho Tabaru and Admire Terra aim to end a 0-for-36 losing streak in the Arc that stretches back to 1969. Aidan O’Brien’s remaining entries have been narrowed to three horses—Diamond Necklace, Minnie Hauk and Benvenuto Cellini—though final jockey allocations may be delayed pending the draw.
Heritage and Competitive Standing
Since the World’s Best Horse Race award was introduced in 2015, the Arc has been named the world’s top race in five of the seven subsequent years, though it has fallen behind the Japan Cup and the Breeders’ Cup Classic since 2021. The race’s long-standing mystique continues to attract tens of thousands of fans from France, Britain, Ireland, Japan and beyond each early October.
Official Arrangements
The stall draw will occur on Thursday morning under the supervision of a Commissioner for Justice, with results kept secret until an opening ceremony broadcast live on France-Galop’s YouTube channel later that evening. The deadline for declaring jockeys and equipment has been extended to Thursday night, allowing Aidan O’Brien’s team to confirm first-choice rider Ryan Moore after the draw.
Outlook
The draw’s revelation on Thursday will finalize the field by Friday, after which racegoers will travel to Longchamp for the Sunday meeting. While the Arc has not reclaimed the official “World’s Best Race” title since 2021, many flat-racing enthusiasts still regard it as the sport’s unofficial pinnacle. The forthcoming inclusion of geldings from 2027 is intended to preserve that status by broadening the pool of elite competitors.
