Holiday Airfare Surge Tied to Iran Conflict
By Drooid · · How we work
Context: Iran war’s impact on jet fuel prices
The conflict that began in late February between Iran and U.S.-backed forces has disrupted oil flows from the Middle East, tightening global supply. As a result, Brent crude rose above $101 a barrel before settling near $98, while jet-fuel-related distillates have climbed sharply. Industry analysts note that jet fuel typically represents up to 30 % of an airline’s operating costs, so the supply shock has directly pressured fare structures.
Numbers: Ticket costs and fuel price spike
Hopper’s analysis shows the average round-trip domestic ticket for Thanksgiving travel now costs about $402, a $95 increase from the previous year. Christmas-season fares average $452, $85 higher than a year earlier. Overall, round-trip tickets are up roughly 31 % compared with the same period last year. Jet-fuel prices jumped from an average of $99 per barrel before the war to a peak of $209 in April, later hovering around $195 in mid-September, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) citing S&P Global Energy Platts data.
Official Statements & Responses
Hopper economist Hayley Berg explained that the more-than-doubling of jet-fuel costs makes fare hikes “inevitable” as airlines seek to offset operating expenses. Energy analyst Gregory Brew of Eurasia Group added that, although oil flows have begun to recover to roughly three-quarters of pre-war levels, crude prices are expected to stay elevated for some time, limiting any near-term relief for travelers.
Travel Recommendations Amid High Fares
Experts advise booking flights well before the holiday peak, as fares are unlikely to decline closer to travel dates. Flexible destination choices—especially opting for warmer locales—can yield savings. Flying on less-busy days such as the Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and returning on days other than the Sunday after the holiday, can reduce ticket costs by several hundred dollars. Similar timing strategies apply to the Christmas period, with avoidance of the days immediately surrounding the holiday offering additional price relief.
