Historical Context

In May 1998 fighting broke out between Ethiopia and Eritrea over Badme, expanding into a war that ended in June 2000 and killed about 70,000 people. The war left Ethiopia dependent on the Addis Ababa-Djibouti corridor, a risk resurfaced on 27 September 2026 when the Tigray People’s Liberation Front seized Erebti, endangering the same route and reviving supply-disruption fears.
