History

Historical Context

After Chief Election Commissioner T.N. Seshan’s mid-1990s voter-list clean-up, the Representation of the People Act empowered the Election Commission to revise rolls. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar announced a nationwide Special Intensive Revision on 27 October 2025, mobilising over 3.94 lakh Booth Level Officers, and the Supreme Court upheld it in May 2026. In September 2026 Minister R.K. Singh alleged the revision led to extensive voter deletions in West Bengal.
