The Attack
On September 29, 2026, a pupil in eighth grade attacked staff and a classmate at an elementary school in the northwestern Slovak village of Staskov. A 61-year-old female teacher was fatally stabbed. A second female teacher, aged 44, sustained a chest wound, and a pupil was critically injured. Slovak police classified the incident as a “violent crime” and confirmed the situation was under control. The motive was not disclosed and custody status of the attacker was not immediately known.
Recent History of School Violence in Slovakia
The Staskov incident follows a series of knife attacks in Slovak schools. Last year, an 18-year-old killed a fellow pupil and a teacher at a secondary school in Spišská Stará Ves. In 2022, a high-school student injured a female pupil in Nováky. Earlier attacks include a 2020 stabbing at an elementary school in central Slovakia that left a teacher dead and several others wounded, and a 2021 incident in which an 18-year-old student killed a deputy principal and wounded two students in northern Slovakia.

President Peter Pellegrini expressed “deep sadness,” offered condolences, and called the event a serious warning for society, urging greater calm, respect, and mutual regard. Prime Minister Robert Fico conveyed “sincere condolences,” said he was following the incident with great concern, and on June 23, 2026 urged all citizens to act in ways that calm the atmosphere rather than further radicalise it. Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok, Education Minister Tomáš Drucker, and Health Minister Kamil Šaško traveled to Staskov to assess the situation.
