History

Historical Context

Founded around 1830 when Kaboyo Olimi I split from Bunyoro, the Tooro Kingdom lost its monarchy in 1967 and was revived as an institution in 1993. After King Olimi III’s 1995 death, his toddler son Rukidi IV was crowned with President Yoweri Museveni present. In 2024 Museveni attended the coronation of Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, appointed by Babiito clan amid a succession dispute raised by Queen Mother Best Kemigisa.
