OpenAI Expands ChatGPT with App-Like Plugins and New Collaboration Suite

At its recent Dev Day presentation, OpenAI unveiled a suite of productivity-focused upgrades for ChatGPT. The company highlighted new “Pages,” “Slides,” and “Space” features aimed at work environments, while also introducing a framework that lets developers embed full-fledged, app-like experiences directly inside the ChatGPT interface.
App-Like Plugin Extensions and Sidebar Integration
OpenAI announced that developers can now create plugin extensions that appear as dedicated panels in a ChatGPT sidebar. These panels support interactive controls, file viewers for any format the developer’s product uses, and event-driven automations via the proposed MCP Events specification. A new Plugin Creator tool streamlines building and submitting extensions to a redesigned directory that offers clearer feedback, improved ranking, and individualized access approvals for users. The company also noted that plugins can be hosted on ChatGPT Sites, enabling users to share their apps with colleagues while preserving data permissions.
Collaboration Features: Spaces, Pages, Slides, and Personal Agents
The rollout includes “ChatGPT Spaces,” collaborative hubs where teams, the model, and new personal AI agents called Dots can access shared files and generated content. Spaces will be available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers first on the desktop app and web, with mobile support slated for later. A meeting-notes plugin can capture audio, generate summaries with action items, and then delete the original recording; it launches initially on macOS for Pro and Business plans, with Enterprise access to follow. To address data-privacy concerns, OpenAI’s Private Intelligence system is positioned as a safeguard for sensitive files. The company also announced Slack and Microsoft Teams integrations that let users mention @ChatGPT to create slides or retrieve information, plus “Pages” for rich documents and collaborative slides that can be exported to PowerPoint or Google Slides in the coming weeks.
Automation and Discovery Enhancements
OpenAI said it is simplifying the addition and management of automations tied to plugins, while also refining how plugins are discovered, ranked, and recommended within conversations.
Outlook and Availability
The new features roll out first on the ChatGPT desktop application and web platform for eligible plans, with broader mobile deployment and additional collaborative tools expected in the subsequent weeks.
