Death and Immediate Reactions
The Right Honorable Adrian Paki Rurawhe MP, former Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives and long-serving MP for Te Tai Hauauru, died after a recent illness. A family statement expressed “deep sadness” and announced that his body will lie in state at Whangaehu Marae before burial at Nga Puketuurua Ratana Pa.
Political Career and Milestones
Rurawhe entered Parliament in 2014 as the Labour MP for Te Tai Hauauru and was re-elected for four consecutive terms. He held senior roles, most notably Speaker of the House from August 2022 to December 2023. Earlier in his career he declined an Assistant Speaker post in 2017, later accepting the Junior Whip position after a call from then-Leader of the House, Chris Hipkins, on behalf of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. He announced his retirement on Waitangi Day, citing a desire to devote more time to his whanau and the Ratana church. Rurawhe was the grandson of former MPs Matiu and Iriaka Ratana and the great-grandson of T.W. Ratana, founder of the Ratana movement.

Labour Maori caucus co-chair Willie Jackson praised Rurawhe as “our Rangatira” and highlighted his humility and dedication to his people. Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick described him as a “beautiful, beautiful man” who brought calm and “generosity of spirit” to the House. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon noted that Rurawhe carried “real mana” and was respected across the chamber.
