History

Historical Context

In 1995, the O.J. Simpson murder trial shocked the nation when Los Angeles County prosecutors used a sealed grand-jury indictment against a former NFL star. The indictment listed 22 felony counts, set bail at $1 million, invoked California Penal Code §187, and the LAPD gathered 150 forensic pieces. Similarly, Ortiz’s indictment for shooting at Rihanna’s Malibu home mirrors that precedent, featuring sealed grand-jury testimony, $2.65 million bail, and a semiautomatic rifle. The recurrence underscores how high-profile celebrity cases repeatedly test California’s legal transparency, prompting calls for reform of grand-jury secrecy and bail standards.
