Historical Context

In July 1997 Ethiopia deployed troops to Eritrea’s Bada village, prompting protests and a disputed map. On 6 May 1998 Eritrean forces entered Badme; Ethiopia declared war on 13 May, sparking the 1998-2000 conflict that killed roughly 70,000 and displaced 650,000. The TPLF’s 2020-21 airport seizures, blamed on Eritrean support, echo those unresolved border disputes and have triggered fresh UN diplomatic action.
