History

Historical Context

President Donald Trump’s July 2026 decision to impose a 50 % tariff on Canadian alcohol, dairy and motorcycles echoes the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act signed by President Herbert Hoover, which raised duties on many goods and deepened the Great Depression. Both moves revived protectionist pressure and provoked retaliatory measures, underscoring a recurring trade-conflict pattern.
