History

Historical Context

Japan seized Taiwan in 1895 after the First Sino-Japanese War, and the 1943 Cairo Conference pledged its return to China. On 25 October 1945 the Japanese 10th Area Army surrendered to ROC delegate Chen Yi, a ceremony the Nationalists called “Retrocession Day” that moved about two million civilians to ROC control by 1946. The disputed legal status of that handover underlies Xi Jinping’s claims and U.S. policy concerns.
