History

Historical Context

Operation Cast Lead, launched in December 2008, marked Israel’s extensive air campaign that sought to dismantle Hamas’s command structure in Gaza. The Israeli Defense Forces reported destroying 1,500 militant sites and killing roughly 1,400 Hamas fighters during the three-month offensive. On September 29 2026, Israel again struck al-Nasr, killing commander Izz al-Din al-Bik, while health officials recorded 1,400 Palestinian deaths since the ceasefire. The pattern reinforces United Nations warnings that repeated leadership decapitations without a durable peace risk deepening humanitarian crises and prompting renewed U.S. diplomatic interventions.
