Trump Administration’s Attempt to Shut Down Voice of America

The State Department’s Office of Inspector General released a report criticizing the Trump administration’s effort to close Voice of America (VOA). The assessment also questioned the savings touted by Trump officials, noting that VOA reaches authoritarian nations such as China and Iran with limited press freedom.

Lake pursued the shutdown, firing nearly all of VOA’s 1,400 employees, canceling contracts, and terminating grants. In March, a federal judge voided Lake’s appointment as interim head and nullified most of her actions. The administration has since reinstated only a handful of journalists from paid leave while the litigation continues.
