New Design Highlights American Heritage
At the America.gov event on September 29, Secretary of State Marco Rubio unveiled a “Flight of the Eagle” passport slated for rollout in 2028. The redesign places a larger, more gold Great Seal and a prominent American eagle on the cover, while interior pages depict milestones such as the American Revolution, westward expansion, the Iwo Jima flag-raising, and NASA’s Artemis missions. An animated effect creates the impression of an eagle in flight when the booklet is turned. The new look follows earlier commemorative issues, including the 2026 Patriot Passport, and is intended to reinforce the document’s identity without altering its security standards.
Fully Digital First-Time Application
Rubio announced that, beginning next year, first-time passport applicants will be able to complete the entire process online through the newly launched America.gov platform. Users will log in via login.gov, pull existing government data, upload a passport photo from a personal device, pay electronically, and track application status in real time. He emphasized that the system eliminates printed forms, drugstore photo-booth visits, appointments, and middle-man services. Rubio stated the goal is for the “vast majority of Americans” to apply digitally by the end of 2027.
Timeline and Implementation
The redesign was presented at the September 29 event hosted by President Donald Trump. The physical passport is expected to enter circulation in 2028, while the online application capability launches next year. Existing passports remain valid until their expiration dates, and the State Department confirmed that older designs can continue to be used for international travel.
Expected Impact for Travelers
According to Rubio, the digital process should reduce reliance on in-person appointments and third-party assistance firms that charge fees, offering travelers real-time delivery estimates comparable to modern food-delivery tracking. He argued that the previous system created profit opportunities for outside companies and that the new platform will make passport processing more straightforward.
