History

Historical Context

The Public Guardian Act 2007, enacted in 2007, created the Office of the Public Guardian to oversee care of vulnerable adults in England and Wales. By 2015, the office managed over 1.2 million protection orders, supervising entities such as care homes, local authorities, and private guardians. Today, Alexander Millington-Cotes’s demand for a probe into Sir Ranulph Fiennes’s isolation echoes the Act’s mandate, as King Charles III, Bear Grylls, Ben Fogle, and Joanna Lumley press the Public Guardian to intervene. The precedent suggests intensified oversight could prompt stricter inspections and funding reforms for UK care facilities, potentially averting future neglect scandals.
