History

Historical Context

In December 2015, after U.S. prosecutors indicted 14 FIFA officials, Sepp Blatter resigned and the FIFA Ethics Committee banned Michel Platini for eight years. Those sanctions exposed deep governance failures and spurred reforms, including UEFA’s 2026 candidate deadline and heightened scrutiny of FIFA leadership. The episode continues to shape calls for transparent election procedures across member associations.
