Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a $7.4 million antisemitism-prevention plan on Sept. 30, 2026.
The plan funds security grants and hate-prevention programs but deliberately excludes the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism.
The UJA-Federation and New York Board of Rabbis praised parts of the plan but said it omits Israel-demonizing rhetoric.
Mamdani appeared in a Billboard-premiered hip-hop documentary with Nas, discussing Bronx hip-hop origins and featuring Fat Joe.
He is the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor and previously performed as “Mr. Cardamom.”

History

Historical Context

In 1998, the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) was founded by 27 governments to codify the IHRA definition of antisemitism. The alliance secured $12 million from European Union cultural funds, enabling training for 4,500 educators across member states. Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s 2026 $7.4 million Bronx antisemitism-prevention plan mirrors IHRA’s model yet deliberately omits the alliance’s definition, prompting criticism from the UJA-Federation and New York Board of Rabbis. This divergence may embolden municipalities to craft selective hate-prevention policies, potentially weakening global consensus on combating antisemitism and shaping future legislative battles.
