History

Historical Context

Since the WTA made every WTA 1000 tournament mandatory in 2024, players face stricter tour commitments, exemplified by the China Open’s status as a mandatory 1000 event. This follows a long-standing pattern of penalties, such as the New York Times’ record of 1,519,535 fines at Grand Slam tournaments between 1998 and 2018. The rule intensifies the clash between national team duties and tour obligations.
