Summary

Chivayo Secures Airport Stake

IMC Construction Kenya, owned by Chivayo, secured a stake in a proposed $2.9 billion airport expansion.
Kenyan officials later said the project’s value was about Sh154 billion, not the earlier Sh375 billion claim.
Chivayo was acquitted of eight fraud and money-laundering charges in 2024 after a 2011 indictment.
A 2018 parliamentary inquiry into his $183 million Gwanda Solar contract led to his August arrest.

History

Historical Context

In 2000, Zimbabwe’s controversial land-reform program, launched by President Robert Mugabe, forced the seizure of over 4,000 white-owned farms, triggering a sharp economic downturn. The World Bank estimated the reforms slashed agricultural output by 30 % and contributed to a 5 % GDP contraction in 2001. Today, tycoon Wicknell Chivayo, whose IMC Construction Kenya secured a Sh154 billion stake in an airport project, died in a helicopter crash that also killed his wife Lucy Muteke and four passengers. The incident shows how Mugabe’s reform legacy—inflated project claims, prolonged fraud trials, and risky transport—still shapes business conduct and regulatory scrutiny in Zimbabwe and Kenya.
