Service Launch and Route Coverage
Amtrak began passenger service with two brand-new Airo trainsets on its Cascades corridor, linking Vancouver, B.C., Seattle, Portland and Eugene. The initial schedule provides four daily trips—northbound from Seattle to Vancouver and from Eugene to Seattle, and southbound from Seattle to Eugene and from Vancouver to Seattle. The launch marks the first use of Airo equipment on a U.S. passenger-rail line.
Features and Capacity
Each trainset offers more than 300 seats, panoramic windows, adjustable-headrest seating, complimentary Wi-Fi, power outlets, USB ports and digital customer-information displays. Accessibility upgrades include automated steps, enhanced wayfinding and touch-less restroom controls. An onboard café serves food and beverages inspired by the Pacific Northwest. The interiors use an evergreen, cream and mocha palette with design cues drawn from the Cascade Range. Siemens Mobility manufactured the trainsets in the United States, and Amtrak reports that components come from nearly 100 suppliers across 31 states.
Official Perspectives
Oregon Department of Transportation interim director Chris Warner said the new trains are intended to usher in a modern, reliable and accessible era of rail travel for the region, emphasizing safety and comfort for passengers with diverse needs. Washington State Department of Transportation secretary Julie Meredith highlighted that the Cascades route is the first in the country to place Airo trainsets into service, underscoring the partnership between state agencies and Amtrak to modernize Pacific-Northwest passenger rail.
Expansion Plans and Future Deployments
Amtrak has ordered a total of eight Airo trainsets for the Cascades line, with additional units expected to enter service through early 2027, eventually replacing the existing fleet. The railroad also plans to deploy Airo equipment on other corridors, including the Northeast Regional service, slated to begin using the new trains in late 2027.
