Opposition Alliance Announces “Save Democracy” Marches
On September 30, 2026 the leaders of the INDIA opposition alliance met for more than three hours to devise a joint response to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls. Congress party President Mallikarjun Kharge announced a series of “Save Democracy” marches that will be held at the district level across the country from October 2 onward. All opposition Members of Parliament are scheduled to march to the Election Commission on October 6.
Planned Protest Timeline
Leaders’ Demands and Statements
During the meeting, former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee (All India Trinamool Congress) called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and also demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi step down. Rahul Gandhi (Congress) said the bloc is committed to ensuring that those who have “destroyed” India’s democracy are “punished.” The alliance also urged that all Supreme Court cases linked to the SIR be resolved “as soon as possible.”
Government Response
Prime Minister Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the opposition of misleading the public about the SIR and of launching an “attack” on India’s constitutional bodies.
Potential Impact
If carried out as planned, the coordinated district marches and the parliamentary protest could intensify public scrutiny of the Election Commission’s handling of voter-roll revisions and pressure the government to address the opposition’s calls for resignations and judicial resolution of related cases.
