History

Historical Context

The 1999 Athens earthquake, which devastated the city on September 7, spurred major upgrades to emergency coordination between the Greek Fire Service and the EU Civil Protection agency. Decades of gas-pipeline accidents worldwide—745 serious incidents in the United States from 1994 to 2013—have likewise driven stricter inspection regimes. Today’s Lysikratous Street blast reflects that legacy, prompting renewed nationwide gas-line checks.
