History

Historical Context

In 1995 MLB added a wild-card spot, doubling each league’s playoff teams from two to four and creating the Division Series. The league later expanded again, and in 2022 a third wild-card team per league was added, eliminating regular-season tie-breaker games. That evolution lets the 2024 Phillies-Braves NLDS and the Dodgers’ pending hosting illustrate how the wild-card format fuels competitive drama and ticket revenue.
