Pentagon Launches Project Meridian to Chart Future Warfare

By Drooid · · How we work

Core Initiative and Objectives

In late September 2026, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Project Meridian, a 120-day effort to study “the battlefields of the future” and pinpoint the weapons and technologies U.S. warfighters will need.

Leadership and Industry Connections

The project will be co-led by three civilian figures:

  • Elon Musk – CEO of SpaceX and SpaceXAI; his companies hold multiple Pentagon contracts, including a $4.16 billion satellite contract and a $2.29 billion military communications contract.
  • Palmer Luckey – founder of Anduril, a defense-tech firm that supplies autonomous weapons and drones; Anduril received a Marine Corps contract worth up to $642 million for counter-drone systems and other contracts for missiles and semi-autonomous aircraft.
  • Newt Gingrich – former House Speaker with prior involvement in military-adjacent projects and an honorary doctorate from Air University.

None of the three co-leaders has served in the U.S. armed forces.

Scope, Timeline, and Oversight

Project Meridian will operate under the direction of Pentagon technology chief Emil Michael, who will oversee the team of government, industry, academic, and policy experts. In addition to the study, Hegseth announced an Autonomous Warfare Command intended to accelerate development and deployment of autonomous systems and drones. The 120-day deadline is intended to yield a report with concrete recommendations for future procurement and development.

Official Statements & Responses

He framed the effort as a means to keep the United States “dominant” amid rapid technological change. The Department of Defense referred inquiries to the Secretary’s public remarks and declined to provide further comment.
