History

Historical Context

The 2012 Delhi gang-rape of a 23-year-old student, dubbed ‘Nirbhaya,’ sparked massive nationwide protests and a landmark legal overhaul. The Supreme Court ordered a fast-track court that cleared 100 cases in twelve months, while Parliament enacted the 2013 Criminal Law Amendment adding 13 sections. Today's Delhi University march from Miranda House to the Swami Vivekananda statue, led by Rahul Gandhi, demands better lighting, DTC shuttles, and toilets, echoing 2012 safety calls. The 2012 precedent shows that persistent student activism can force authorities to improve infrastructure, suggesting forthcoming upgrades to campus facilities and transport services.
