History

Historical Context

In the 1996 Israeli general election, Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud secured a narrow victory, forming a government without the United Arab List. Likud won 32 of the 120 Knesset seats, while the United Arab List captured only 2 seats, and voter turnout reached 70%. Today’s exclusion of Ra’am and the Joint List by the Central Elections Committee mirrors that 1996 precedent, where right-wing parties blocked Arab representation. Such patterns have entrenched political polarization, prompting Otzma Yehudit’s legal challenges and eroding public trust in Israeli institutions.
