History

Historical Context

Protests involving at least 100,000 people secured the UK Disability Discrimination Act in 1995, superseding the 1944 Disabled Persons (Employment) Act. The law required public bodies to make reasonable adjustments; the British Museum’s 2002 tactile guide attracted 12,000 visitors and the Bayeux Around Britain tour now links 60 museums, while English Heritage and the National Trust have allocated £5 million for further accessibility upgrades.
