India advanced to the semifinals on the basis of its No. 1 ICC T20I ranking.

History

Historical Context

In the 1982 Asian Games, India defeated Pakistan 7-1 in New Delhi, securing its first hockey gold in the tournament. The Indian Hockey Federation recorded a 70% increase in domestic attendance, with 70,000 fans watching the final at the National Stadium. Similarly, the 2026 Games semifinals pit India’s hockey team against Pakistan at Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium, and T20I ranking advances India after a rain-abandoned quarterfinal. The parallel underscores how historic Indo-Pak rivalry and ranking-based advances continue shaping Asian Games outcomes, prompting organizers to improve drainage and broadcast plans.
