Burial of the Victims
A funeral procession will move the coffins of 105 people killed in an Israeli airstrike to the Sheikh Radwan cemetery northwest of Gaza City. The procession, organized by the General Directorate of Civil Defence, is scheduled for Thursday and will involve family members of the deceased.
Background of the Airstrike
In October 2023, Israeli forces launched a series of air strikes that deployed at least 20 bombs on the Yarmouk Square neighbourhood. The attacks leveled the seven-storey Al Taj 3 building and destroyed several adjacent residential structures. The operation was part of the broader conflict that began in early October 2023 when Israel started its war in Gaza.
Recovery Operation Details
The civil-defence teams recovered the bodies in coordination with an Egyptian committee. According to the director of civil-defence operations, Abdul al-Majdalawi, heavy machinery such as bulldozers and excavators used by rescue crews was deliberately targeted, making the recovery “impossible” at the time of the strike. The current effort is described as the fifth-largest body-recovery mission since the war began, measured by the number of remains retrieved.
Official Responses
Abdul al-Majdalawi emphasized that the targeting of rescue equipment hindered timely access to the victims. Osama Sharaf, who lost 37 relatives in the strike, confirmed that 16 additional family members—including his parents, siblings and a nephew—were identified among the newly recovered remains. The General Directorate of Civil Defence confirmed that the burial will proceed as planned.
Impact on Affected Families
The burial provides a rare moment of closure for families who have endured prolonged uncertainty. Sharaf’s testimony highlights the scale of personal loss, while the coordinated effort between Gaza’s civil defence and the Egyptian committee underscores regional cooperation in addressing humanitarian needs amid ongoing conflict.
