History

Historical Context

In 1991 the Gulf War saw the coalition rush Patriot batteries to Saudi Arabia, establishing a rapid-aid precedent. After Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea, the U.S. began sending Patriots to Europe, delivering two systems to Poland in March 2022 and three complete batteries to Ukraine in 2023. Belgium’s pledged F-16 jets now aim to replicate that swift support amid ongoing Patriot shortages for Kyiv.
