Casio Unveils Ultra-Limited Sapphire G-Shock MRG-D5000

By Drooid · · How we work

The Flagship Release

Casio announced the MRG-D5000, the first G-Shock with a blue-sapphire outer case and bezel, limited to 20 pieces worldwide. The Japanese-market suggested retail price is ¥11 million (? $69 k), while European listings cite about €80 000. Release is slated for the final months of 2026, with sales beginning in December in Japan and November in Europe.

Engineering the Impossible

The development effort, dubbed the Blue Rose Project, builds on the 2018 Dream Project, which produced an 18-karat-gold G-D5000 prototype and a sapphire-crystal concept that failed shock-resistance tests. After the retirement of Dream Project founder Kikuo Ibe, Casio’s MR-G engineering team refined the concept, creating a Multi-Guard Structure that divides the case and bezel into interlocking components. This screwless architecture, likened to traditional Japanese timber framing, disperses impact forces and eliminates stress-concentrating screw holes that could crack sapphire.

Design and Materials

  • Sapphire processing – Blue sapphire ingots are selected for optimal color and transparency before machining into case and bezel elements.
  • Construction – The bezel and outer case consist of multiple sapphire pieces that interlock without screws. A screw-lock caseback of Grade 5 titanium carries a sapphire insert and is numbered (1/20 – 20/20) with a “Dream Project” engraving.
  • Dial and accents – The stainless-steel face retains the classic G-Shock brick pattern, finished with a blue PVD coating; the MR-G logo and “SHOCK RESIST” wording are applied in 24 karat gold.
  • Strap – A Dura Soft rubber strap mirrors the brick pattern in three dimensions, paired with a titanium clasp.
  • Movement – The internal module uses Casio’s Gallium Tough Solar technology for solar charging and high thermal tolerance.

Related Releases in the Blue Rose Line

  • MRG-B5000SA-2DR “Super Blue” – Two 2-carat facet-cut sapphire gems, a Cobarion bezel, and blue arc-ion plating. Limited to 500 pieces, priced at €6 600, available November 2026.
  • GMW-B5000SB-1A2 “Gem Accents” – Full-metal G-Shock with four round sapphire stones on the bezel corners. Limited to 500 pieces, priced at €779, slated for November 2026.

Official Positioning

Casio claims the Multi-Guard Structure delivers the shock resistance expected of an MR-G watch, though independent destructive-test data have not been published. The model is presented as a showcase of engineering heritage, targeting collectors interested in rare materials and the brand’s technical evolution.

Market Impact and Audience

At a price comparable to high-end luxury watches, the MRG-D5000 places the G-Shock line within the ultra-luxury segment.
