History

Historical Context

After Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned in February 1979 and the monarchy fell in the March 1979 referendum, Iranian students seized the U.S. embassy on 4 November 1979, holding 52 diplomats for 444 days until January 1981. The crisis spurred President Jimmy Carter’s costly rescue attempt and deepened U.S. wariness of prolonged Middle-East entanglements. It also preceded Iraq’s 22 September 1980 invasion, which cemented the region’s volatility.
