On 2 May 1996 the AIADMK, led by J. Jayalalithaa, fell from power after corruption scandals, winning just four of 234 seats (1.7 % share) and losing her Bargur seat by 8,366 votes to DMK’s E. G. Sugavanam. The DMK-Tamil Maanila Congress alliance captured 221 seats and all 40 parliamentary seats, reshaping Tamil Nadu’s coalition politics and setting a precedent for today’s fragmented by-poll contest between AIADMK, DMK and TVK.
