Amazon Unveils Refreshed Kindle, Paperwhite and Colorsoft Lineup

By Drooid · · How we work

New Models and Design Overhaul

Amazon introduced an updated family of e-readers: a 6-inch base Kindle, a 7-inch Kindle Paperwhite and a 7-inch Kindle Colorsoft. All three feature a flush-front display, thinner bodies (6.8 mm) and lighter weights—140 g for the base Kindle, 204 g for the Paperwhite and Colorsoft. The power button moves to the top-right edge, and new color options wrap the chassis. Aluminum variants are offered for the Paperwhite, Colorsoft and the base Kindle, providing a premium feel and double the storage (32 GB vs. 16 GB).

Pricing and Storage Options

  • Base Kindle – 16 GB, plastic, $149.99; 32 GB aluminum, $189.99.
  • Kindle Paperwhite – 16 GB, plastic, $199.99; Signature Edition (aluminum, 32 GB, auto-adjusting front light, pogo-pin dock charging, double-tap page turn) $249.99.
  • Kindle Colorsoft – 16 GB, plastic, $289.99; Signature Edition (aluminum, 32 GB, same premium features) $319.99.

Battery life remains up to six weeks for the base Kindle and up to 12 weeks for the Paperwhite. The Colorsoft’s nitride-LED light guide improves color brightness, and the display uses an oxide backplane with custom waveforms for higher contrast.

Accessories Expanding Functionality

Amazon added three new accessories compatible with the 2024-and-newer Kindle family:

  • Kindle Click – $34.99 Bluetooth remote with page-turn and brightness buttons.
  • Charging Dock – $59.99 stand that charges Signature Editions via pogo pins.
  • Page-Turn Cover – $79.99 magnetic case that adds physical page-turn buttons, usable only with Signature Editions of the Paperwhite and Colorsoft.

Official Statements & Responses

Kevin Keith, Amazon’s Vice President of Devices, said:

“The team redesigned the new family of devices from the ground up, beginning with a newly designed reverse stack display construction—a first for the e-reader category. Every device now features a flush-front display—no raised border interrupting the reading surface. Just a seamless edge-to-edge display for an uninterrupted page and thinner, more portable device.”

Amazon noted compliance with the EU’s new battery-replacement regulations, highlighting user-replaceable batteries.

Verbatim Quotes

  • “Our latest Kindle Colorsoft has a completely redesigned display, using the reverse printing technology we applied across the lineup for edge-to-edge color,” — Amazon.

Timeline

  • October 1 – Amazon corrected earlier reporting, confirming that the Paperwhite and Colorsoft launch on October 28.
  • October 28 – Pre-order availability for the Paperwhite and Colorsoft; launch date for these devices.

Why It Matters

The refresh marks Amazon’s first major hardware redesign in the Kindle’s 20-year history, positioning the lineup against competing devices that emphasize color displays and premium materials. By offering both budget-friendly plastic models and higher-end aluminum variants, Amazon aims to capture a broader price spectrum while maintaining its market lead in e-reading. The new accessories address user requests for tactile page-turning options without altering the thin form factor.

What’s Next

Pre-orders for the Paperwhite and Colorsoft continue on a rolling basis, with shipments slated for the end of October. Amazon has indicated that Kids versions of all three models, featuring child-friendly covers and a year of Amazon Kids+ subscriptions, will be available alongside the standard SKUs. No further product announcements have been scheduled.
