History

Historical Context

After the National Research Council chose six astronauts from more than 4,300 applicants in 1983, Marc Garneau flew aboard NASA’s Challenger on 5 October 1984, becoming the first Canadian in space on a seven-person STS-41-G crew. That milestone underpins today’s Canada-U.S. partnership, exemplified by astronaut Joshua Kutryk’s 2024 SpaceX Falcon 9 launch observed by Minister Mélanie Joly.
