History

Historical Context

The 1973 Yom Kippur War, launched on October 6, 1973, caught Israel off-guard despite intelligence alerts, leading to a costly stalemate. Prime Minister Golda Meir’s government faced a 20-day emergency, while the U.S. under President Richard Nixon dispatched $2 billion in aid to stabilize the front. Today's accusations by Yair Lapid and Naftali Bennett echo the 1973 criticism of Defense Minister Moshe Dayan for ignoring Arab mobilization warnings. The 1973 debacle prompted Israel to overhaul its intelligence apparatus, a reform that still shapes how leaders assess threats amid contemporary political disputes.
