History

Historical Context

Square Enix’s 1997 launch of Final Fantasy VII, which sold over 14.4 million copies, pioneered a “polymorphic content” strategy that expanded the game into films, spin-off titles and a multimedia Compilation. That model inspired later creators, and today Stone Kite—founded by Bungie co-founder Jason Jones and author Margaret Stohl—uses a free comic and a 250-creator roster to test a similar transmedia franchise approach.
