Israel Tightens Pilot Vetting

Israel will require detailed security vetting of all pilots flying into its airspace, potentially limiting crew nationalities.
Transport Minister Doron Spielman said the ministry will verify pilots’ identities and run background checks before each flight.
Aviation experts recommend an international system for sharing pilot background information to improve global flight safety.
Since 9/11, TSA mandates recurrent crew training that emphasizes active resistance rather than compliance during hijack scenarios.

History

Historical Context

In July 1976 Israel’s Defense Forces, acting on government approval, launched Operation Entebbe to free 106 hostages on a hijacked Air France flight in Uganda. Commandos rescued 102 hostages, killed all hijackers and 45 Ugandan soldiers, while Yonatan Netanyahu became the sole Israeli fatality. The raid established a precedent for rigorous crew vetting that underpins today’s Israeli checks on pilot nationalities.
