History

Historical Context

In May 1998 border clashes at Badme sparked a war that saw Ethiopia occupy roughly a quarter of Eritrea’s territory by May 2000. A June 2000 cease-fire led to the Algiers peace agreement in December 2000 and the UNMEE mission, which withdrew after Eritrea restricted fuel in 2008. Today Ethiopia’s expulsion of Eritrean diplomats and drone-strike accusations revive fears of renewed hostilities.
