Historical Context

The euro launched as an accounting currency on 1 January 1999, replacing francs, marks and lira in eleven EU states under the Maastricht Treaty. The European Central Bank in Frankfurt started with €200 billion capital, each of Germany and France contributing roughly €30 billion, and now serves 21 eurozone members and 358 million users. Today the ECB pilots AI-enabled digital-euro trials with 36 banks, extending the original integration goal.
