USPS Implements Extra Measures to Safeguard 2026 Mail-Ballot Delivery

By Drooid · · How we work

USPS Announces Expanded Hours and New Ballot Services

On October 1, the United States Postal Service disclosed that it will adopt a series of extraordinary steps to handle the millions of ballots expected for the November 2026 congressional elections. Retail post offices may lengthen their operating hours beginning in early October, and a dedicated “Ballot Post-mark Only” line will be added at counters, alongside a drive-through ballot-mail option. The agency also plans expedited handling, additional deliveries, and special pickups for ballots. From October 24 through the election, carriers are required to inspect every delivery point for outgoing mail, even when no incoming mail is present.

Recent Legal and Policy Context

The measures follow a September 14 ruling in which the U.S. Supreme Court refused to allow the Postal Service to enforce a rule that would have restricted mail-in voting. That rule had been adopted after former President Donald Trump issued a March executive order aimed at tightening mail-voting regulations. The court’s decision removed a key obstacle to the Postal Service’s current efforts.

Operational Timeline

  • Early October – Retail branches may extend hours and open ballot-specific service lines.
  • October 24 onward – Carriers must verify outgoing mail at all delivery points throughout the election period.
  • Election week (early November) – Continued use of Priority Mail Express for rapid ballot transport and the newly established drive-through option.

Mail-Ballot Usage Data

In the 2024 presidential election, the Postal Service delivered 99.2 million ballots to and from voters. Mail voting accounted for about 30 percent of total votes, a decline from the 46 percent share recorded in 2020. These figures illustrate the scale of the logistical challenge the agency now faces.

The Postal Service’s expanded operations aim to ensure that every ballot is processed and delivered in time for the upcoming congressional contests, countering earlier attempts to limit mail-in voting and addressing concerns about timely ballot handling.
