Alleged Ambush Shooting
In a parking lot at the Dublin Sports Grounds, Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old New York Times executive, was found with multiple gunshot wounds after prosecutors say his 77-year-old in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, opened fire in a planned “lying in wait” ambush. Several 911 callers reported gunfire before a Dublin Police Services sergeant arrived. Witnesses identified a black Honda Civic leaving the scene, and surveillance video allegedly captured the couple firing “in concert.” Police described the shooting as occurring with “blatant disregard for public safety” while children were nearby.
Divorce, Custody and Domestic-Violence Disputes
The shooting unfolded amid a bitter divorce and child-custody battle. McKinsey and his estranged wife, Candice Jang, had been married 14 years and were living apart; Jang held sole legal and physical custody of their three children. Court records show a temporary restraining order granted to Jang in October 2025 and a pending family-law status conference scheduled for early October, followed by a three-day domestic-violence hearing in December. Both parties filed mutual abuse allegations. McKinsey claimed Jang physically and emotionally abused him weekly, forced him to eat a dead cockroach, and directed anti-LGBTQ slurs at his son through his mother-in-law, Chen. Jang, in turn, alleged McKinsey abused her, the children and her parents, seeking protection from him.
Official Legal Actions
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged Zhang and Chen with murder, asserting they deliberately killed McKinsey. Separate misdemeanor charges were filed against McKinsey in October for allegedly striking his six-year-old son and leaving his two-year-old child unattended while shopping. Police later executed a search warrant at Jang’s home; the scope of the search has not been disclosed. It remains unclear whether Zhang or Chen have retained legal counsel.
