Tragic Fall at Benjamin Franklin High School
On Wednesday at approximately 1 p.m., a male student fell from a fourth-floor balcony at Benjamin Franklin High School in the 800 block of North Avenue 54, Highland Park. The fall resulted in the student’s death after he was transported by the Los Angeles Fire Department to a local hospital. Police have not released the student’s name.
Immediate Response and Investigation
Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson Officer Rosario Cervantes said there is “no evidence of foul play.” The Los Angeles School Police Department classified the incident as a “medical emergency,” and the Los Angeles Unified School District spokeswoman Marine Davtyan confirmed that the emergency required the school to be placed on lockdown for nearly three hours while investigators gathered evidence. The LAPD is leading the investigation, and the school announced it will remain open the following day with grief counselors available for students.
Eyewitness Accounts
Fellow student Andrew Rivera described hearing a “big thump” before learning the campus had been locked down. These accounts suggest a dispute preceded the fatal fall, though officials have not confirmed the details.
Community Reaction
“I heard a kid fell off the fourth floor. My heart was racing. I had to call my children to see if they were OK because no parent wants to have that phone call saying that your son or daughter unfortunately died,” — Jessica Gomez
Support Services and Ongoing Inquiry
The school will provide grief counseling, and investigators continue to interview witnesses and review any available video footage. Parents and students have been asked to remain vigilant about bullying and conflict, with school officials emphasizing the need for supportive interventions while the investigation proceeds.
