History

Historical Context

The 1996 ICC Cricket World Cup, co-hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, concluded on 1 March 1996 with Sri Lanka’s triumph. The tournament attracted a record 1.2 billion television viewers worldwide, and India’s semi-final against Sri Lanka drew over 600 million Indian viewers. Similarly, the 2027 World Cup will open in Cape Town with India facing Australia, and India will meet Pakistan in Johannesburg, echoing the rivalry’s appeal. The precedent set in 1996 suggests the 2027 tournament could generate billions in advertising revenue and cement South Africa’s status as a premier cricket venue.
